Gys Joubert, MD of the Gondwana Collection in Namibia recently attended the CEO Accelerator and shared his overall learnings and experience with us.
The CEO Accelerator is an expertly crafted three-day learning experience for a selected group of CEOs, offering a deep dive into building CEO craft, in an expertly facilitated space to think and learn about how to improve on your leadership.
Q: Why did you choose to attend the CEO Accelerator?
“As CEOs, we spend a lot of time thinking about ROI but our primary role is leadership and how often do we invest in our own leadership? If you think about it, it’s rather obvious but shockingly absent. I think it’s something that will happen a lot in the future as the world is waking up to the power of leadership. That is why I attended – for self-development: to challenge myself and to improve my leadership for the benefit of myself but also for the benefit of the company.”
Q: As a CEO, what has been of the greatest value to you and what was your greater personal shift?
“It was the self-exploration – getting to know myself better. That was a massive shift for me – particularly the Enneagram profile and what it taught me about myself. It was a huge perspective change and a real, real improvement. A life-changing shift, actually. Getting to know myself better – my strengths and the areas of weakness – there was a monumental shift in the way I lead, particularly through becoming sensitive to my own blind spots and also through the really deep-diving into oneself, with that came some real self-confidence I now choose courage over comfort.”
Q: How is your business changing as a result of your attendance?
“In the long run, especially in the journey of our business, there has been a real shift in focus on leadership, not just on (our usual focus on] business and strategy. And further than that, the way we see the world and the way we see ourselves in it. It’s having profound changes on the way I see my role in terms of self-management and looking at the new world that we are operating in. Our business is changing because of the changes in me and the changes in my leadership. That’s the primary change. Secondly, though, we’ve embarked on a broader leadership journey within our business and it will have an everlasting impact on our business.”
Q: What do you think would be missing from your leadership now if you hadn’t experienced the CEO Accelerator?
“I would be a much poorer person without a Kickstarter experience like the CEO Accelerator. If you don’t challenge yourself you won’t find your blind spots. If not through something like the Accelerator, where will the challenges and new perspectives come from? Where will improvement come from? It’s just an enriching experience all around. Just a substantial and substantive enrichment in the way we lead.”
Q: How do you see the CEO Accelerator experience affecting you in the long arc of your CEO development journey?
“It goes back to the first question – how much time and investment do we focus on leadership? In terms of long-term, sustainable improvement in a fast-changing world, If one reflects on these things it becomes quite obvious that we need to do more of this [leadership] work in the future.”
